As the cutting room moves clcoser and closer to the point of data acquisition (collection) as a part of the ediscovery ( electronic discovery ) cycle, it only makes sense that flter and culling rules will ultimatly be stacked with the initial filter done based on straighforward and clear meta data.  Being able to memorialize the decision process (to defend it if needed) as well as memorializing what WAS not included may prove very important if a fight breaks out over what was filtered out.
For instance - By Custodian, By Date Range, By File Type, Removal of Known System Files, De-Duplication make perfect sense to remove from the collection at the earliest possible point in time.
Keyword searching, conceptual searching, near duplicate detection, and a host of time consuming and sometimes expensive undertakings.  Â
Taking several cuts at the data will ultimately deliver a set of data that contains less chafe and costs you and your client less overall to process and to review.  Not to mention saving you alot of time and headache.
A really good tool to look at for establishing what you have and coming up with clear filtering rules is  http://www.earlycase.com
Once you understand what you have you can use earlyCASE’s budgets and timeline features to adjust the assumptions and review what the costs and time requirements will be to deal with this eDiscovery.
